Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly joined the race to sign Andre Silva, with the AC Milan striker also being targeted by Arsenal
According to a report by Daily Mirror, Wolverhampton Wanderers are plotting an audacious swoop for Andre Silva, whose future at AC Milan is uncertain. The Portuguese striker is also being courted by Arsenal, who are now set to be rivalled by the Championship side in pursuit of the player.
Andre Silva has struggled to take his career to the heights that his potential has promised for a long time. The player, in fact, only broke his scoring duck in Serie A last week in what was his 17th appearance in the Italian top-flight.
Silva was impressive in the Europa League, with 8 goals in 14 outings, but he has largely flattered to deceive. To make matters worse, the advent of Patrick Cutrone, coupled with the presence of Nikola Kalinic has seen his share game time to start upfront. The youngster still remains a popular figure in the transfer market though, with Arsenal believed to be in his pursuit.
The Gunners were reportedly interested in signing Silva last summer before he went on to join AC Milan instead. But, it is hard to explain Arsenal’s continued interest in the player, with record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is likely to be the first-choice striker at the Emirates next season.
In addition to the Gabonese striker, Arsene Wenger also has Alexandre Lacazette and Danny Welbeck as his options to lead the line. With the Arsenal boss unlikely to deploy a strike partnership, Silva’s position might not improve much, i.e. he will still have to share game time with other strikers.
But, he might have an alternative to Arsenal in Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves are looking like the favourites to secure promotion to the Premier League and are looking to continue making improvements to a squad that has been bolstered by some big name Portuguese talents.
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has yielded his influence among Portuguese players, using his agent Jorge Mendes and his links in the country to good effect. With Andre Silva also represented by Mendes, Wolverhampton Wanderers might just have an ace up their sleeves to trump Arsenal.
With Premier League football likely on offer, and with some lofty ambitions for European football, Silva could just be lured to the Molineux in the summer. Arsenal though, will probably have Europa League football already on the platter for the player, which they might use to their advantage.
But, with regular first-team minutes possibly coming at Wolverhampton could just secure the services of Silva. It now remains to be seen if Wolves indeed go on to sign him, or if Arsenal finally succeed in landing their target man.
