Transfer Rumour: Manchester United invite MLS prodigy Alphonso Davies to trial

Manchester United have reportedly offered to take up Major League Soccer prodigy Alphonso Davies, currently a part of Vancouver Whitecaps, on trial.

According to The Sun, Manchester United are ready to take their interest in Canadian prodigy Alphonso Davies to the next step. The Vancouver Whitecaps teenager, who has been taking Major League Soccer by storm, has been invited by the Red Devils for a trial at the club.

Born in Buduburam, Ghana, the youngster took his initial steps in football in Edmonton before joining the Whitecaps Residency FC and ultimately the Vancouver Whitecaps. At club level, the player has been sensational since breaking into the senior setup, with 36 appearances already credited to his name in the present season.

Alphonso received his Canadian citizenship in June, 2017 and has since gone on to debut at the senior level for Canada as well, with 3 goals in 5 appearances to show for his efforts.

Ability-wise, the player packs a mean left-foot and his versatility – the youngster is able to play on the left side of the wing, as an attacking midfielder as well as a striker – is an added bonus. His explosive start in MLS has already attracted interest from Europe.

Manchester United and Liverpool are two teams that have been linked to the player for a while now. And it seems the Red Devils want to move quickly before several other clubs join them in their pursuit of the 17-year-old. United have called the winger on a trial with the view of taking a closer look at the his talent and assessing whether to convert their pursuit into a formal offer soon.

The trial offer will have to be agreed upon by Vancouver Whitecaps for Alphonso to come to Manchester, where the red half has been on a recruitment spree in order to bolster its youth setup. The Red Devils now boast of a star-studded Under-18 squad thanks to a year and more of scouting and recruitment of the best of youngsters from across the world.

The latest to be linked to United, apart from Alphonso, is Anderlecht’s youth captain Eliot Matazo, who is being chased by a host of top European clubs. Hence, unlike the Belgian, United will hope they can wrap up a deal for Alphonso quickly.

But, the 17-year-old will have to prove himself during the trial period if he is to earn a move to what is hailed as one of the best production lines in world football. Here’s to hoping, especially with United not having a single North American representative in their squad despite an American ownership.
