Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing David Luiz in January, with the Brazilian having fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea
According to a report in Daily Mail, David Luiz is the subject of interest from Real Madrid, who eager to make defensive reinforcements. Los Blancos are weighing up a move for the Brazilian defender, who has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea, and a January move could be on the cards.
Luiz is currently in his second spell at Chelsea, after spending three years previously before joining PSG in 2014. Upon his return to Stamford Bridge, the player went on to enjoy a spectacular campaign for the Blues, playing a pivotal role in the club’s Premier League title triumph last season.
This season though, things have been a little different. Andreas Christensen has been a revelation in the sweeper role in the back-three, meaning Luiz is no longer an indispensable figure for the Blues. On top of that, he has fallen down the pecking order after a fall-out with Antonio Conte.

With the World Cup mere months away, there’s a risk that Luiz could miss the trip to Russia, should he fail to rack up enough minutes for the rest of the season. A move away from West London could, thus, be in the offing, and one club is ready to hand the player a lifeline.
Real Madrid are interested in signing Luiz in the January transfer window, despite the fact that he will be cup-tied in the Champions League, having already represented Chelsea in the competition. But, he would be able to shore up Zinedine Zidane’s defensive unit considerably nevertheless.
2016-17 has been somewhat of a struggle for Los Blancos, whose defensive frailties are one of a number of problems that Zidane is tackling. At the heart of defence, Raphael Varane has struggled with various injury problems, while Jesus Vallejo is yet to establish himself as a reliable option in the first-team setup.
Luiz could, thus, be a viable solution at the heart of defence for Real Madrid. On top of that, his ability to provide cover in defensive midfield and full-back, if required makes him an option worth considering for the club.
Luiz is likely to be tempted by the prospect of playing for the European heavyweights as well, meaning a move could happen, if Real Madrid make their move. It now remains to be seen if Chelsea let the player depart from Stamford Bridge mid-season to make the switch a reality for him.
