Barcelona have identified a potentially cheap alternative to reinforce their defence in January in Jorge Mere, with the FC Koln youngster available at around €15 million.
Spanish publication Don Balon are claiming that Barcelona have identified a potential bargain for the upcoming transfer window. FC Koln youngster Jorge Mere is reportedly a target for the Blaugrana and with the player thought to be available at around €15 million, the current La Liga leaders could make a move for him in January.
Jorge Mere only arrived at FC Koln in the summer of 2017, with the Bundesliga outfit bringing the player over from Sporting Gijon, who were relegated to the Liga Segunda. The 20-year-old though, has failed to establish himself as a regular at Koln, with just 2 appearances each in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Europa League respectively.
And with the player’s failure to get minutes under his belt, he could be ready to depart just a few months into his Bundesliga stint. Barcelona are pondering whether to move for the youngster. For one, the player did perform admirably for Sporting Gijon in La Liga, with 56 appearances under his belt.

For a 20-year-old, Jorge Mere possesses a decent amount of senior exposure in La Liga. Barcelona, on the other hand, are looking to reinforce their central defensive area. Thomas Vermaelen is thought to be on borrowed time at Camp Nou while Javier Mascherano is also another name who is reportedly a target for other clubs.
Barcelona have been looking at options like Yerry Mina. And while the Colombian’s arrival seems to be a matter of when rather than if, the Catalan giants are looking to hold off on signing the player before the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, Matthijs de Ligt is a more achievable target in the summer compared to the January transfer window.
Jorge Mere, on the other hand, is a more realistic option come January. Indeed, the 20-year-old could be tempted to return to Spain to add to the prospect of representing one of the most iconic clubs in world football. An outlay of €15 million will not bother Barcelona much, with the club getting a prospect like Jorge Mere in return.
Koln are rock bottom in Bundesliga and could use the money from a player who is not a regular to invest in other areas come January in order to attempt an escape from the relegation zone by the end of the season. This deal looks achievable and we could see it happening if Barcelona do decide to go in for the 20-year-old.
