Transfer News: Manchester United set to send Luke Shaw out on loan in January

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly open to sending Luke Shaw out on loan in January as he struggles to break into the first-team

According to a report in The Sun, Luke Shaw looks set to depart from Old Trafford in the winter transfer window, albeit temporarily. The out-of-favour defender does not feature in Jose Mourinho’s plans for the rest of the season and the Manchester United manager will sanction a short-term loan.

Shaw became the most expensive teenager in the world when he joined Manchester United from Southampton in the summer of 2014. But, his career has completely stalled since making the switch to Old Trafford, having managed just 49 appearances in a little over three years.

Injuries have played a major role in halting the player’s progress at the club, but Jose Mourinho has also questioned his attitude and work ethic since his arrival last summer. But, it now looks like Shaw’s relationship with his manager has strained completely, having fallen out of favour this season.

Indeed, despite returning to full fitness back in August, Shaw has managed just two appearances from the bench in the Carabao Cup. In fact, the report suggests that the pair are not on speaking terms, which has compelled Shaw to now look for a way out of Old Trafford.

Mourinho, too, is ready to sanction a loan deal for the player in January if Manchester United receive the right offer for him, before moving him on permanently next summer. As per the report, several Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on Shaw’s situation, as are some others across Europe.

If true, this would be the last straw for the beleaguered Englishman at Old Trafford, despite the fact that left-back is one of the few problem areas in Mourinho’s squad, with none of Daley Blind, Ashley Young and Matteo Darmian managing to perform at a consistently high level when deployed in an unfamiliar role.

Marcos Rojo, who is set to return from a long-term injury later this month, has not managed to convince as a left-back either, But, instead of turning to Shaw, Mourinho looks set to enter the transfer market for a left-back, with Kieran Tierney among the names that have been linked.

For Shaw though, a move away from Old Trafford could do his career a world of good and even keep him in contention for a place in England’s squad for the World Cup. Either way, his stint with Manchester United appears set to come to an end soon, first in January before leaving permanently next summer.
