Transfer Rumour: Real Madrid set to reignite interest in Bayern Munich defender David Alaba

Real Madrid are reportedly set to reignite their interest in David Alaba, and are set to pursue a move for the Bayern Munich defender.

According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Real Madrid have rekindled their interest in David Alaba, with Florentino Perez keen on sanctioning a move for the Bayern Munich defender. The Austrian is likely to be open to a move to Santiago Bernabeu as well.

Alaba joined the youth setup in 2008 and rapidly progressed through the ranks before establishing himself as a regular fixture in the senior squad in 2011. Since then, the player has been an integral figure within the first-team setup, and is widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world.

In all, Alaba has already made over 250 appearances for Bayern, although an ankle injury has restricted him to just five outings thus far this season. A healthy contributor to his team’s cause, the Austrian has 24 goals and 33 assists in his senior Bayern career, and his exploits have earned him several high profile admirers.

The biggest among these are Real Madrid, who have been monitoring the player for a long time, and now seem set to launch a move. The departure of Carlo Ancelotti has paved the way for a lot of instability in the Bayern Munich dressing room, and several players are reportedly open to seeking new challenges.

Alaba is believed to be a part of this set of players, as per the report, with Real Madrid interested. While his versatility does potentially make him an asset at the Bernabeu, he will most likely have to share game time instead of being a firm first-choice option.

At left-back he could provide serious competition to Marcelo, and is certain to be ahead of Theo Hernandez in the pecking order, with the report suggesting that there are doubts over the summer arrival.

Alaba is also an option as a defensive midfielder, but with Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric going strong in the midfield, the 25-year-old is unlikely to usurp any of them for a regular starting berth. The only realistic prospect to secure regular first-team football lies at the heart of the Real Madrid defence.

But even as a centre-back, he will have to compete with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane for a regular place. Alaba, though, is open to a move to Real Madrid, with Florentino Perez keen on him as well. Therefore, it remains to be seen if the multi-faceted Austrian indeed makes his way to the Bernabeu.
