Chelsea are reportedly set to pursue Toby Alderweireld and are preparing a move for the Tottenham man that could see his wages being doubled at Stamford Bridge.
According to The Sunday Times, Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a shock move for Tottenham superstar Toby Alderweireld. The Blues have been looking at Virgil Van Dijk. But, with the pursuit of the Dutchman going haywire, they are now looking at the Belgian, who appears to be in a contract standoff with the club.
Toby Alderweireld’s first foray into the Premier League was on loan at Southampton, where he impressed at the back and was one of the standout players, despite which the move was not made permanent by the Saints. And, the defender landed at Tottenham next season, with Mauricio Pochettino bringing the player over to White Hart Lane.
Toby Alderweireld earns just £50k p/w. It’s any wonder he wants more:
Smalling £80k.
Luiz £130k.
Stones £100k.
Debuchy £70k.
Lovren £75k.— Adam Joseph (@AdamJosephSport) August 20, 2017
At Tottenham, the player has been able to establish himself from the get-go, gelling in well with a group of similarly ambitious and driven players, slotting in easily at the back alongside compatriot Jan Vertonghen. Last season, the player featured in 30 Premier League games and was one of Pochettino’s trusted men at the back.
However, Rose’s stormy interview highlighting the underpaid status of many of Spurs’ superstars has put a question mark on their Tottenham future – Toby Alderweireld is one of the aforementioned players. The Belgian reportedly earns just £49,000 per-week, a remarkably low pay considering the average wages of starters in other top clubs.
Alderweireld, though, could still stay in London, with Chelsea interested in the player. The Blues have added Antonio Rudiger to their backline but are still scouring for another centre-back to beef up their squad, with Virgil Van Dijk the priority target all along.

However, difficulties in pursuit of the Southampton man may now see the Blues target Alderweireld, who could be tempted to jump ship and join Chelsea in order to get a more lucrative financial package – the Blues are ready to more than double his current wage at Tottenham.
Alderweireld started for Tottenham in a 2-1 loss against Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday. The Blues have already heaped pressure on Pochettino with the victory and might be about to pile a whole lot more by initiating the offensive for the Belgian. Tottenham have signed Davinson Sanchez but Alderweireld, who has been a revelation for the side, could prove to be catastrophic.
