Inter Milan are reportedly ready to hijack Manchester United’s summer move for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic
Italian publication Corriere dello Sport have reported that Inter Milan have emerged as suitors for Nemanja Matic. The report states that the Nerazzurri are set to steal a march on Manchester United for the Chelsea midfielder, with the Premier League champions reluctant to do business with the Red Devils.
Matic rejoined Chelsea from Benfica in the winter transfer window of 2014 after his first spell at the club had ended in a whimper. The player’s second coming at Chelsea though, has been quite the topsy-turvy one, with several highs and lows over the course of the last three and a half years.
While Matic played an instrumental role in Chelsea’s Premier League triumph in the 2014/15 season, the arrival of N’Golo Kante saw him sharing game time with Cesc Fabregas in the Blues’ second top flight title win in three years last season, even though he did play a key role in Antonio Conte’s side.

Ahead of the forthcoming season though, Matic’s place in the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge is under threat, with Tiemoue Bakayoko set to move to the Premier League champions. The arrival of the second French midfielder in two years is likely to reduce Matic to a bit part role and thus, he is likely to leave Chelsea this summer.
Leading the race to sign the Serb thus far have been Manchester United, with Jose Mourinho keen on adding steel to his side with the addition of the player. The Portuguese manager is known to be an admirer of the player’s talents, having also been key in bringing him back to Chelsea in 2014.
Bad blood though, seems to have been developed between Chelsea and Manchester United following the latter’s acquisition of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker had been heavily linked to a return back to his former side before Manchester United stole a march on the Blues at the last moment.
Therefore, Chelsea are now unwilling to do business with the Red Devils, paving the way for Matic’s other suitors to storm into the lead. Taking advantage of the situation are Inter Milan, who are now set to make a move for him.
The Nerazzurri are preparing for the departure of key midfielder Joao Mario, who is set to join PSG, as per the report. With the likes of Marcelo Brozovic and Geoffrey Kondogbia blowing hot and cold last season, Matic is just the kind of quality midfielder who can add solidity to Luciano Spalletti’s side.
It now remains to be seen if Manchester United are able to enter the fray for Matic again, or if they are forced to resign themselves to seeing him join Inter Milan instead. The player though, is unlikely to have a future at Chelsea considering the imminent arrival of Bakayoko.
