Antoine Griezmann set to sign bumper long-term deal with Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann is reportedly set to sign a bumper new long-term deal with Atletico Madrid.

Spanish publication AS have reported that Antoine Griezmann is ready to commit his long-term future to Atletico Madrid, having accepted Los Rojiblancos’ offer of a new and improved contract.

Griezmann has evolved into one of the best attacking players in the world since joining Atletico Madrid from Real Sociedad in 2014. At the peak of his powers at the present moment, the player is considered to be the standout superstar for both club and country, having been the most prolific contributor to both his sides.

During his three-year spell at the Vicente Calderon, Griezmann has impressively notched up 83 goals and 25 assists in 160 appearances for Atletico, making a direct contribution every 114 minutes for the Spanish heavyweights.

The aforementioned are highly impressive figures; figures that made the France international one of the most highly sought-after players in Europe, with some of the biggest clubs in the continent chasing after his signature.

Griezmann, though, had looked set for a move to Manchester United this summer, with the Premier League club reportedly prepared to trigger the €100 million release clause in his contract with Atletico.

In fact, Jose Mourinho had reportedly made the player his top target for the summer transfer window, with his side in desperate need of a prolific attacker following the long-term knee injury sustained by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the latter stages of the recently concluded campaign.

However, Atletico Madrid will not be able to sign or register any player until January 2018 after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the club’s summer transfer ban. The aforementioned ban has seen Griezmann reaffirming his commitment to Los Rojiblancos, thereby forcing Manchester United to cede their interest in him.

And now, the 26-year-old is set to put pen to paper on a bumper new deal with Atletico that will see him commit his long-term future to the club. And with Griezmann choosing to remain loyal to the club, Los Rojiblancos have, perhaps, secured their biggest deal for the summer.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho will have to turn their attention elsewhere in order to bolster his side’s attacking options, ahead of what is set to be a busy summer of continued squad rebuilding for the Manchester United boss.
