Transfer Rumour: Liverpool set to step up pursuit of Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon

Liverpool are reportedly ready to step up their pursuit to sign highly-rated teenage prodigy Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham in the summer

According to a report in the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are plotting a move to land prodigious English left-back Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham in the summer transfer window. The highly-rated teenager has also been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Sessegnon has made quite an impact at his boyhood club, where he has rapidly progressed through the ranks to become a full fledged member in the first-team setup at the tender age of 16. So much so, that the teenager is starting to be regarded as one of the most exciting young prospects in Europe, let along England.

The 16-year-old has become a mainstay in defence for the Cottagers, making 29 appearances across all competitions for the club this season. And it is not just his defensive performances that have caught the eye as he has also chipped in with seven goals and four assists for Fulham – a healthy contribution for any defensive player.

His stellar performances for Fulham have also seen him become a regular in the England under-19 setup and it is believed that it’s only a matter of time before Sessegnon earns a move to a bigger club. That move could, in fact, come as soon as this summer, with Liverpool eager to sign the 16-year-old.

The Reds have been long-time admirers of the teenager’s talents and have been tracking his progress for some time now, and as per the report by the Echo, they are plotting a move to bring him to Anfield in the summer transfer window.

Defence has indeed been an area of big concern for Liverpool, who have conceded 42 goals in 34 Premier League games this season. Only Watford and Southampton have let in more goals among teams in the top half of the table.

Their are growing calls to bolster the defensive options in the summer in order to become genuine contenders for the title, with too many gaping holes at the back to enable Jurgen Klopp’s side to do so. And it is believed that left-back is the first option that Klopp will address this summer.

James Milner has played as a makeshift left-back all season long and has been quite solid in his new role. But the England international is on the wrong side of 30, and backup option Alberto Moreno has done little to inspire Klopp’s confidence in him after often proving to be vulnerable at the back.

As a result, the Spaniard is all set to be offloaded in the summer, and Klopp has prioritised a left-back reinforcement. Hull City defender Andrew Robertson has also been scouted, but the report in the Echo suggests that Sessegnon is the preferred option for the Liverpool boss.

After his breakthrough campaign for Fulham it is not hard to see why, as Sessegnon is brimming with potential and can be a long-term solution at the left side of defence for the Merseyside club, potentially starting out as the understudy to Milner before becoming the first-choice for Klopp.

The likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham have all been previously linked with the 16-year-old but Liverpool seem to be in the driver’s seat. It now remains to be seen if the Reds can persuade Sessegnon to sign his first professional contract with them in the summer.
