Transfer News: David De Gea’s Manchester United future under a cloud following rift with Jose Mourinho

David De Gea was reportedly dropped for Manchester United’s trip to Sunderland after he had a rift with manager Jose Mourinho.

According to a report by The Sun, David De Gea had a bust-up with manager Jose Mourinho last week that led to his ouster from the Manchester United squad for the trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland on Sunday.

A minor hip injury was credited as the official reason for De Gea’s absence from Mourinho’s match day squad on the weekend, but the report states that he was, in fact, dropped following a disagreement in training with his manager.

In addition to that, the Manchester United boss has also been left aggrieved by De Gea’s recent performances, which was another key factor in Sergio Romero being favoured to the Spain number one.

De Gea has been one of the most influential players for Manchester United, in what have been four topsy-turvy seasons following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. The club has failed to match the heights that they achieved during the legendary Scot’s reign at Old Trafford, thanks to several underwhelming performances.

Most of the players have failed to perform at a consistently high level, but there has been one standout player who has been imperious during this period – David De Gea. Imperious between the sticks on most occasions, he has blossomed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world in recent seasons.

He has been at his best for large parts of the current campaign as well, keeping 11 clean sheets in 29 appearances, while conceding just 24 goals in the process. All that has put a target on his back, with Real Madrid set to enter the market for De Gea yet again after failing to sign him in 2015.

Los Blancos are believed to have made it their top priority to acquire the services of a world class goalkeeper in the summer following the inconsistent showings by Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla, who have managed to keep just 10 clean sheets between them in 48 games in all competitions, conceding 57 goals in the process.

It goes without saying that De Gea will be a massive upgrade on the duo, not least because of his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Recent reports, though, stated that De Gea is happy at Old Trafford and is not looking for a move away from Manchester United in the summer.

However, that is in stark contrast to the latest report by The Sun, which claims that all might not be so well between De Gea and Mourinho. Manchester United have quoted a price of at least £66 million if they are to let go of their prized asset and it remains to be seen how things develop in the coming months.

As of now, though, De Gea could well be teetering on the brink of an exit from Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens in June.
