Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move for Houston Dynamo wonderkid Kelechi Onyewuenyi, who has been labelled the new John Obi Mikel.

As per an AllNigeriaSoccer exclusive, Chelsea are showing interest in Houston Dynamo wonderkid Kelechi Onyewuenyi. The report states that the Blues are keeping tabs on the player’s progress with the MLS outfit with a view of a transfer in the near future.

Kelechi Onyewuenyi has been with Houston Dynamo for a while now and is currently a part of the club’s Under-18 side. The player is set to turn 18 in March, with his birthday on March 15, and could be set for a promotion within the ranks at the club.

But, as per the reports, the player could be set for a move to Europe, with the player garnering interest from a host of European outfits. The website reports that the player has already been offered to several unnamed English Premier League clubs while Norwegian giants Rosenborg are also heavily interested in the talent.

And now, Chelsea are also keeping tabs on the talent. The 17-year-old is blessed with an excellent range of passing, is strong, both physically and technically, and has laudable vision. The aforementioned qualities have drawn comparisons with Nigerian and Chelsea legend in John Obi Mikel.

The Nigerian International completed a move from Chelsea to Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Teda in January after a highly successful and coveted career at Stamford Bridge and for the Super Eagles as well.

Although born in United States, the player is reportedly open to playing for Nigeria, for which he is eligible due to the origin of his parents.

Perhaps, Chelsea’s interest could be down to the comparisons with their former player, especially, with Antonio Conte set to receive a massive warchest in the summer as he looks to add depth to the midfield for the next campaign.

As per the report, Chelsea’s technical director Michael Emenalo has already conducted preliminary talks with the player’s intermediary and the Blues could be ready to pounce in case some other club table on offer at Houston’s table.

The player could benefit from a move to a big club like Chelsea, with the state-of-the-art facilities available at his disposal and the quality of teammates and coaches to guide and nurture his talent. It remains to be seen, however, if this would turn into reality in the near future or not.
