Manchester United are reportedly prepared to pay R$ 100 million to land the highly-rated Fluminese midfielder Gustavo Scarpa in the summer

Brazilian journalist Edilson Silva, who works for Radio Bradesco Esportes and Band TV, has claimed on his Instagram account that Manchester United are interested in Fluminese star Gustavo Scarpa. The player, who is hailed as one of the best attackers plying his trade in Brasileirao, is reportedly a summer target for the Red Devils.

Silva has stated that Fluminese are aware of United’s interest in Scarpa and goes on to further speculate that the Red Devils are prepared to shelve out a mammoth 100 million in Brazilian currency, which converts to around £26 million, to land the 23-year-old in the summer.

Gustavo Scarpa is a Brazilian Under-23 international who is predominantly a left winger with the ability to be deployed on the right side of the attack as well. The player has progressed through the youth ranks at Fluminese to now being a key player in the first-team setup.

Scarpa has been immense this season for Fluminese in the Brasileirao, with 8 goals and 10 assists in 34 appearances, and has been one of the rare positives for the side in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the club.

Manchester United are in search of adding depth to the wide areas in the attack which has been depleted since the departure of Memphis Depay from Old Trafford. They were linked with Goncalo Guedes, who ended up joining PSG instead, and have been regularly linked with other wide attackers in recent times.

Scarpa is touted as one of the best attackers in Brazil and would add a bit of the Samba flair to a Manchester United squad that doesn’t have a single Brazilian in the first-team in a while. However, Lucas Sposito has thrown some shade on the speculation on SportWitness.

Sposito, who is also a journalist, has written that the speculation is not being taken seriously by Fluminese fans, due to the past accuracy rate of news broken by journalists from Band TV.

Also, he doubted as to why Manchester United will pay a rounded figure of 100 million in Brazilian reais, which translated to £26 million, which is far from being a well-rounded figure compared to the amount speculated in Brazilian currency.

The player’s contract expires on 31.12.2019, which means the player has around 3 years left on his deal. This makes the aforementioned fee not as inflated.

Sposito praised Scarpa’s talents, though, stating that it is only a matter of time before the player makes the move to Europe. But, the player’s pedigree to play for a club as big as Manchester United is yet to be gauged.

It is difficult to call the news either way. One thing, though, is sure. Scarpa is one of the most talented players in Brazil and it isn’t long before the player makes the move to Europe, be it at Manchester United or otherwise.
