Anotonio Conte has played down talk of a domestic double after Chelsea eased to 2-0 victory over Wolves in the FA Cup
The English Premier League leaders reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup after an entertaining tie at the Molineux. Chelsea showed the gulf in class between the two sides and looked fairly comfortable throughout the game.
They did have an early scare, when Wolves hit the post after Asmir Begovic was called into action withing the second minute and George Saville wasted a glorious chance when he smashed a half-volley against the post only a few minutes later.
The early chances woke Chelsea up and the visitors began imposing themselves on the game more and more as the half wore on. Pedro then opened the scoring 20 minutes into the second half before Diego Costa wrapped things up 2 minutes from time.
Speaking after the match, Antonio Conte was pleased with the performance from his team – especially his squad players – and played down talk of a domestic double as he felt it was far too early to tell if Chelsea would manage to bag both trophies.
“In the league we are doing and great job in staying on top of the table and now we are in the FA Cup quarter-final and I am pleased for this,” he said, according to the club’s official website. “But after this game it is important to understand that nothing is easy. It will be very difficult to win both competitions but we want to try to win some trophies.”
“It was the toughest game we have played in this competition so far for sure,It is not easy when you don’t play a lot, and John and Cesc and all the players showed me they have good form and it means they are good professionals. It is great to have these type of players in my squad because I can count on them.”
Despite Conte’s insistence that it is too early to call, Chelsea are heavy favourites for the English Premier League given their fine form this season – especially as many others continue to be inconsistent.
The Blues have evolved into a point-winning machine under Antonio Conte and rarely seem troubled by teams. They have also shown that they are capable of adapting their style in the big games and this bodes well for their run in the FA Cup.
Conte has shown his tactical flexibility and if the Blues continue to put in performances by this one, they will sure be the frontrunners for the FA Cup as well. Conte is right to temper expectations but it increasingly looks like the Italian is set for a League and Cup double in his very first season in England.
