Transfer News: Chelsea enter race for Mahmoud Dahoud

Chelsea have reportedly joined the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and others in the pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach star Mahmoud Dahoud.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have joined a whole list of clubs that are pursuing Borussia Monchengladbach star Mahmoud Dahoud. The midfielder was a prime target for Juventus and Liverpool, but it looks like Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea have now joined others in the pursuit of the 21-year-old.

Dahoud has been a mainstay in the Gladbach lineup this season, with 24 appearances so far in all competitions, and a modest return of 1 goal and 3 assists. The midfielder has emerged as one of the positive performers in what has been a slow season for the club.

Dahoud’s deal is set to expire in 2018 and he has already rejected an extension with the club, which only fuels the speculation linking him to an exit from the club.

And, with Gladbach resigned to lose the 21-year-old, they are looking to sell him in the summer of 2017 than risk the prospect of losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires. There have already been reports in Germany, though, of an agreement of €10 million in place for the player to move to Dortmund in the summer.

But, as per the report, the player’s agent has also held talks with several other clubs, including Chelsea, in the last weeks as they seek a favourable move for their client. Chelsea have been linked with many box-to-box midfielders recently, like Radja Nainggolan and Franck Kessie, who are defensively strong.

And Dahoud fits the bill. The player would be available for a fee much cheaper compared to the aforementioned two targets and could be a smart piece of business by Chelsea, something they have become renowned for.

However, Chelsea do have a lot of competition in the pursuit of Dahoud. Liverpool were front-runners to secure Dahoud’s services in the recent past and could come back in for the 21-year-old in the summer. Also, Juventus have never been reported to have backed out of the race to sign Dahoud either.

But, along with the likes of Liverpool and Juventus, Dortmund and PSG are also interested in the player. PSG recently have seen immediate results after the capture of German star Julian Draxler and could be looking to add another promising young German to their ranks.

Dortmund already have an impressive core of young talents in their squad and Dahoud would only add to it while also being able to slot in perfectly, having played in Germany all his professional career. But, there is the case of regular game-time, something that probably hands Liverpool the advantage if they do return for the player.

It will be interesting to see where Dahoud ends up but his exit from Gladbach seems all the more certain.
