Bayern Munich’s finance chief Jan-Christian Dreesen has confirmed that the club received an £86 million bid from Manchester United for Thomas Muller last summer.

In an interview with German publication Bild, Jan-Christian Dreesen said that Bayern Munich did receive a mega bid from Manchester United for attacking talisman Thomas Muller in the summer.

When asked about receiving a bid from United, Dreesen said: “There really was such a thing. A fax came from England. For us, however, a sale of Thomas Muller was never discussed. If a player fits us, we would be stupid to take the short-term prospect of a record profit to weaken the team.”

If the sale would have gone through, the Bayern star would have become the world’s most expensive footballer. Given the failure in signing him, Jose Mourinho turned his attention to the Serie A where he paid £89 million for Paul Pogba.

Thomas Muller has been a long-term Manchester United target and was reportedly chased by the Red Devils in the summer as well. The attacker has been struggling in Germany this term, and has reportedly grown frustrated at the club.

He is aiming to win his fifth consecutive Bundesliga title, but has not been backed with the best run of form this term. The 27-year-old has managed to find the back of the net on just four occasions in 26 appearances in all competitions, and more disappointingly just once in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has done an exceptional job at the Manchester outfit this season. But at 35, doubts remain as to whether or not he will continue his good run of form in the coming years.

Mourinho will definitely be looking to add to his attacking options come the end of the campaign, and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann has been heavily linked.

The French superstar verbally agreed to a move in January, and the club will be doing everything in their control to lure him to Old Trafford for the 2017/18 season. He is welcoming the prospect of joining forces with his compatriot Pogba in Manchester, and together the duo will be looking to take English football by storm.

It remains to be seen as to which reinforcements will Mourinho bring as he will be hoping to put up a legitimate fight for the league next season.
