Frank Lampard was on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM show with John Terry, where he spoke about his desire to return to Chelsea someday.
The former England international has been linked with a move back to Chelsea, after he was spotted in and around Stamford Bridge over the last few days. He appeared on Soccer AM alongside former teammate and captain John Terry, and spoke about what his future held after being released by NYCFC.
He insisted that was undecided on his immediate future, and joked that he was still waiting for the call from his former club: “I’m still waiting for the five-year contract to come through from Chelsea, they haven’t called yet! We [including John Terry] used to get those easily!”
However, he admitted that the decision wasn’t his to make: “Whatever happens, in some capacity I will be at Chelsea, whether that’s with my season ticket watching them, but I don’t know. I will be in very close contact, whether I have a role, that’s not all in my hands so I can’t go any further than that.”
He has previously expressed his desire to manage Chelsea someday, but after his most recent visit to Stamford Bridge, current Chelsea boss Antonio Conte believes Lampard wished to prolong his career and the Italian think the 38-year-old was in good enough shape to do so.
Lampard insisted that he wasn’t worried about nearing the end of his career as a player and was very relaxed regarding the matter, and when the right thing came along he would take it. “Obviously Chelsea, I would love that,” he said, before adding that it didn’t always work that way.
After being released by Chelsea in 2014, he had a season long spell at Manchester City before moving to MLS side New York City FC for two seasons. After a difficult start to life in Manhattan, he was once voted as ‘The Worst Signing In MLS History’, but had only positive things to say about his time there.
He managed to turn things around in superb fashion and would go on to become an integral part of Patrick Viera’s team. He scored 15 goals and registered 4 assists in 29 games during his stay there. Just before reaching the 300 career goal milestone, September 1st was declared as ‘Frank Lampard Day’ in New York by city mayor Bill de Blasio.
