Manchester United to offer Jose Mourinho a contract extension?

Jose Mourinho could soon have a contract extension offer on his table with the Manchester United hierarchy keen to retain his services beyond the three years he was originally signed for in the summer.

It hasn’t been an ideal start for Jose Mourinho as the manager of Manchester United; far from it, in fact.

Frustrating draws against the likes of Stoke City, Burnley, Arsenal and West Ham United have denied the Red Devils of the three points the fans think they have deserved in each of the aforementioned fixtures. On top of that, losses in crucial games against Manchester City and Chelsea have severely dented their Premier League title hopes, just four months into the season.

However, the stuttering start notwithstanding, the quality of football has been exciting and fast paced, something that the Manchester United faithfuls had been yearning for in the post Sir Alex Ferguson era.

And, the Guardian reports that it is that positivity on the football field, alongside a host of other factors that have prompted the decision makers at the club to offer him an extension on his current three-year contract, a move backed by the Glazer family.

The Guardian further point out Mourinho’s positive influence behind the scenes as well, with his image of being a grumpy boss a far cry from the enthusiastic and light-hearted manager that he is around his players on the training ground.

Mourinho is keen to make it a long-term project at Old Trafford as well, as he said in October: “I would like to stay here for many, many years. That would mean that probably I wouldn’t be searching for another club in the Premier League.”

The results have started picking up as well, with Manchester United undefeated since the 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea in October.

With three consecutive wins over Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion, Mourinho’s side has roared back into contention for a place in the Top 4, as they now lie just four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal. And, with an EFL Cup semi-final clash against Hull City on the cards, Manchester United might not be far off from winning a first trophy under Mourinho this season.

The signs are nothing but positive at Old Trafford as the players are seemingly happy under a manager who has brought liveliness on the pitch and off it. As Mourinho continues to impress the Manchester United bosses, it seems ominous that a new contract will soon be in the offing for the Portuguese manager.
