Manchester United have reportedly moved into pole position to land Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij, who is also on the radar of Arsenal and Chelsea.

Italian publication Il Messaggero are claiming that Manchester United are now in pole position to sign Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij. The centre-back has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League, to the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, and now Manchester United seems to have not only joined their rivals but also moved into pole position to sign the Netherlands international.

Stefan De Vrij is one of the hottest young defensive properties in Europe. The player suffered an excruciating injury that kept him out for almost the entirety of last season, but the 24-year-old has since made a successful comeback and seems to have recaptured his old form quickly.

The Netherlands international goes about his business with aplomb and is thought to be tailed by the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal.

Chelsea and Antonio Conte need a couple of defensive additions to add depth to their newly deployed 3-man defence.

Arsenal started off well with Mustafi’s arrival seeing the club notch up clean sheet after clean sheet. But, the club has since failed to record a single shutout in the last nine games and Arsene Wenger is looking to delve into the market to add another defender as the Gunners aim to mount a title challenge.

And now, Manchester United have joined the race. The player, who is rated at £35m (figure quoted by Goal), has been handed a contract extension by Lazio, who are keen to retain their asset. But it is thought that the Serie A side could be interested in negotiating a transfer for the player, if they were to receive a substantial offer.

Jose Mourinho has had to oversee a plethora of defensive problems in his still-short stint at Manchester United. Injuries to first-choice centre-backs Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling have derailed the Red Devils’ form and they have been leaky at the back.

De Vrij seems to have a plethora of choices at his doorstep. The 24-year-old can either choose to stay at Lazio or move, wherein he may choose Juventus, if the player wants to stay in Serie A, or one of three Premier League heavyweights – Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United – that are vying for his signature.
