Liverpool are reportedly set to battle their Merseyside rival Everton and La Liga heavyweights Barcelona for Uruguayan prodigy Gustavo Viera

The Sun have claimed that Liverpool and Everton are both showing interest in 16-year-old Uruguayan forward Gustavo Viera. The player seems set to be at the heart of a Merseyside derby, albeit, off-the-pitch with both the clubs aiming to steal a march on each other in pursuit of the latest Latin American attacking prodigy.

Gustavo Viera is a 16-year-old Uruguayan striker, who is currently plying his trade for Liverpool Montevideo, a club in his home country. The teenager has already featured at international level for the Under-17 iteration of his nation and has impressed in his outings for Liverpool Montevideo’s youth team, which has now catapulted him to be a part of the senior squad.

Viera is currently training with the senior squad and has been attracting interest from four European sides. Along with the Premier League duo of Liverpool, Everton, Barcelona and Feyenoord have also kept a track on the progress of the player. Liverpool, Everton and Barcelona have all sent their representatives to scout the player while Dutch giants Feyenoord have already had Viera over to their club to give the player a tour of the facilities and take a closer look at the player.

Viera’s playing style and skill-set has drawn comparisons to Brazilian forward Adriano, who had a successful career in Europe. Even though Viera has played for Uruguay’s Under-17 side, the player is reported to be holding an Italian passport, which removes the barrier of the work-permit regulations and make it easier for him to earn a move to Europe.

England is tipped to be the most likely destination for Viera with the player being represented by the England-based Nick Maytum from TMG Football, an agency. This is likely to hand Liverpool and Everton an advantage over Barcelona and Feyenoord in the pursuit of the player.

It would be interested to see which club gets the upper hand, Liverpool or Everton or if one from Barcelona or Feyenoord are able to to steal a march on their competition. For now, though, Viera’s stock is on the rise and the nation would be hopeful that the striker is able to become the next prodigious striker to come out of Uruguay.
