Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande are reportedly keen on offering Chelsea captain John Terry an escape route and are lining up a bumper £8m-per-season deal for the defender.
According to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, John Terry will be offered a mega salary deal to play in the Chinese Super League next season. Guangzhou Evergrande are among the suitors for the Chelsea captain, and could offer him an escape route out of England. The defender is already an ambassador for the club that is managed by former Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Despite starting the season as Antonio Conte’s first-choice centre-back, an ankle injury, coupled with a change in tactics, has seen Terry struggle to break into the first team. After conceding three goals in 45 first-half minutes against Arsenal, the Italian manager opted to field a back three, and his side’s defence has yet to be breached in the league since then.
Cesar Azpilicueta started the campaign as a left-back, played on the right-flank for a few games, but is now looking at home on the right side of Chelsea’s three-man defence. The Blues’ deadline day signing David Luiz looked like a panic buy, but has now become Conte’s ball playing defender. Gary Cahill, too, has improved considerably of late, and has strengthened Chelsea’s resolve.
Due to this, Terry has found himself warming the bench at the Bridge. After being virtually undroppable for most of his Chelsea career, the 35-year-old has now become dispensable at the London club.
It may be in the best interests of the player to move on and let a younger generation carry the glorious name of Chelsea. Also, with a big-money deal coming his way, it may be too good an offer to turn down given his age and recently dwindling form.
