Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Argentinian superstar Angel Di Maria to boost their attacking options.
Spanish publication Don Balon have sensationally claimed that Chelsea are looking to secure a deal to bring Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria to Stamford Bridge. The 28-year-old previously had an unsuccessful stint at Manchester United and could be set for a return to the Premier League as Antonio Conte looks to strengthen his attacking options.
Chelsea started steadily under Antonio Conte with some solid performances and the Italian seemed to be gradually improving the side. However, the Blues have now lost their last two Premier League games in a row, with the manner of the defeats a real cause for concern.
Arsenal dismantled the Chelsea defence at the Emirates on Saturday, scoring three unanswered goals in the first-half which virtually sealed the win. While the Blues defence has looked shaky thus far this season, it is believed that Antonio Conte was more disappointed with his side’s inability to create chances and trouble former goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Now, as per Don Balon, Conte is seeking a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria in an attempt to add to his attacking options and increase the competition for places among the creative players in the squad.
Di Maria has had a stint in the Premier League with Manchester United, who signed him for what was the British record transfer fee from Real Madrid. The Argentine registered 3 goals and 10 assists in 27 Premier League appearances in his debut season, but was inconsistent and was accused of being nonchalant at times (stats via whoscored). The former Real Madrid winger was then sold to PSG after failing to truly settle in England.
The Argentina international redeemed himself to an extent in his debut season in France, recording 10 goals and 18 assists in Ligue 1 as the club ran away with the league title. His performances landed him a spot in the league’s Team of the Year, while the 18 assists meant he finished the season as the league’s top provider.
However, Unai Emery’s appointment at PSG does not seem to have benefited the 28-year-old, who has thus far failed to replicate his 2015-16 form. Di Maria has no goals and two assists in seven appearances for the French giants thus far this season.
Securing a transfer for the player could prove to be difficult given the amount of money Chelsea would have to pay to prise the player away from Parc Des Princes. Even though Di Maria does seem content and happy at the club for now, the 28-year-old may feel he has unfinished business in England and might just decide to take the plunge in order to prove himself in the Premier League.
