Antonio Conte is reportedly eyeing a move for free agent Martin Caceres to bolster his defensive options.
Italian publication calciomercatoweb have claimed that Antonio Conte is interested in a deal to sign Martin Caceres. The Uruguayan international is currently a free agent after his deal at Juventus expired on 30th June and is yet to be snapped up by a club.
Chelsea have seen the return of David Luiz on deadline day in a shock swoop from Paris Saint-Germain, with the Brazilian joining the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry and Kurt Zouma as a contender for the central defender spot.
Marcos Alonso also joined the Blues but Antonio Conte still seems to be unimpressed by the squad depth in Chelsea’s squad.
The end of the transfer window has not deterred the Italian to look for options to add to his defence as the manager is now eyeing a move for Caceres, who was a more than able presence in the Juventus squad and has previous experience of working under the manager during their time at Turin.
Juventus chose not to offer the 29-year-old a new contract and despite interest from a number of Serie A clubs including the likes of Roma, Napoli, Inter Milan and AC Milan, the player was not able to secure a contract at any club which means that he is still a free agent.
Unlike the transfer deadline, the free agent deadline did not expire on August 31 and Chelsea are free to negotiate with and in case of an agreement, sign the player, who is currently available to sign.
Caceres to serve as catalyst for Conte to deploy 3-5-2 at Chelsea?
Martin Caceres is adept at playing across the back four and could come in handy as a cover for the starters at Stamford Bridge for Antonio Conte, who could also look to deploy his 3-man defence at his new club with the arrival of Caceres.
The option of Caceres’ would provide Conte with five first-team central defenders, which is likely to be the ideal number of players required at that position in order to deploy a 3-man defence.
Roman Abramovich would be more than happy to oblige the manager as Caceres’ wages is unlikely to be a problem for the Russian billionaire, and Chelsea could be set for the authentic Conte experience with the addition of Caceres to the Blues squad.
