Transfer Rumour: Sunderland turn down loan deal for Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho

Sunderland have reportedly rejected the possibility of signing the French center back on loan from Liverpool.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was open to sending Sakho out on loan in order to give him more game time.

The Black Cats were in contention to sign the 26 year old, but manager David Moyes has decided to show faith in Papy Djilobod ji, who he thinks is capable enough to cover the left side of central defense. Also, Moyes is looking for a different style of player and is lining up a bid for Barnsley’s Alfie Mawson. At the same time, he is trying to hold off offers from his former cliub Everton for defender Lamine Kone.

However, fans were left bemused with the decision to not sign Sakho on loan, as defensive reinforcements should be Sunderland’s top priority this summer owing to the departure of Younes Kaboul to Watford and John O’Shea’s sudden injury.

Sakho, with his experience of big games and defensive abilities was supposed to be a good option for Sunderland. However, David Moyes decided not to go for the controversial center back.

This season is turning out to be a sour one for Sakho. During Liverpool’s pre-season training in USA, he was sent home by Klopp for  not respecting the rules that had been put in place for the squad. His place in the starting lineup has also come under threat as new signings Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan are also vying for a spot.

There is no question of Sakho’s abilities. He is known for his tremendous athleticism and passing accuracy. In fact, he would be the ideal player to fit into David Moyes’ squad and help them with some credible performances, and sorting out the team’s defensive problems that they are currently facing.

Meanwhile, Everton have submitted an 18 million pound bid for Lamine Kone and it will take some doing to hold on to him. Sakho was easily available on loan, and it looks like Moyes has made a bad decision, seeing how was forced to play Jack Rodwell in defense in Sunderland’s opening day 1-2 defeat at the hands of local rivals Middlesbrough.
