Caen’s young midfielder Jean-Victor Makengo is reportedly attracting interest from Premier League duo Manchester United and Manchester City.
Italian media outlet Il Messaggero have claimed that both Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in Caen midfielder Jean-Victor Makengo. The two clubs have reportedly sent their scouts to watch the 18-year-old in action in an attempt to determine whether it is worth making an offer for him at this stage.
Makengo burst onto the scene last season as he broke into the first-team setup at Caen, finishing the season with as many as 10 league appearances. The midfielder rose to prominence in the past year when he guided France to victory at the U17 European Championships, and the youngster’s stock has been on the rise ever since.
Manchester United have continued to bolster their squad at Old Trafford under new manager Jose Mourinho with high-profile signings like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba. However, the Red Devils have also made some signings for the youth team as they continue to revamp their academy setup.
Manchester City have signed some young players as well, but given their quality and experience, they will be involved in the first-team setup at the Etihad under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.
It is reported, however, that the Manchester clubs face competition from Italy with Juventus, Inter Milan and AS Roma all interested in the 18-year-old. The Serie A trio is keeping a track of the midfielder’s progress and have sent representatives to scout Makengo.
Makengo is known for his ability on the ball, while also being able to find his teammates in dangerous positions to create goal-scoring opportunities. The French U17 international likes to dribble and is quite adept at troubling the opposition keeper from long range.
The youngster currently has less than two years left on his contract at Caen, which expires in 2018, and the high-profile clubs have already started circling around him. Caen will try and get as high a fee as possible for their player and could ask Makengo to sign a new contract, but they will be powerless to stop the teenager from leaving if big clubs like United, City or Juventus make serious offers.
