David Beckham backs new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to bring success at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United superstar David Beckham has tipped Jose Mourinho to be a success at United and bring back the fear factor at Old Trafford. Beckham was himself a part of the highly coveted Class of ’92 at United winning six league titles under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, before moving to Real Madrid in 2003. The superstar sat down with Sky Sports to talk about his boyhood club.

David Beckham highlighted the tumultuous time at Manchester United after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and before the appointment of Jose Mourinho. The former England captain has reiterated that there was a sense of fear at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson which was unfortunately lost after the Scot’s retirement with United only winning one major trophy – The FA Cup in 2016 – in the following three seasons.

Because we were always a club — and are still a club — that when teams come to Old Trafford, they know they are going to be up against it and they know they are probably going to lose. So that is what we need to get back to.

Beckham was asked about what he thinks of United hiring Mourinho after the Portuguese was sacked by Premier League rivals Chelsea and the former midfielder backed the manager to bring back the glory days at Old Trafford.

I fully expect it to work,” he said. “With Jose leaving Chelsea and now coming back into the Premier League with United, for me it is a great move. So now with Jose in there, he knows what he wants and how to get it, he knows how to win titles. I think that is what Man United definitely need to get back to and they need to get back to being feared again.”

The Englishman was asked who he expected to win the title to which he replied:

I am going to have to say United. I will always be on that side of the fence.

There is an air of confidence around Old Trafford after the appointment of the Portuguese manager. Jose Mourinho has received the backing of a host of Manchester United legends following his appointment and it looks like the hierarchy, the legends and the fans all believe that in the Portuguese, United have at last found the rightful successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Only time will tell whether he is able to emulate the legendary manager he calls his friend, advisor and idol and is able to bring back the “fear factor” at Old Trafford which was once ever-present at the club.
