Arsenal are in the market for a top class central striker, after they were exposed by the lack of finishing up front last season. The speculation surrounding a prolific Argentine forward’s arrival has been further strengthened by news of the possible departure of the current first choice striker Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman has become a much maligned figure at the Emirates because of his lack of goals for Arsenal. The forward has notched up 57 goals in 135 appearances since arriving from Ligue 1 side Montpellier in 2012. This is not an impressive tally considering he is the number one striker of an ambitious club like Arsenal who aim to compete for the Premier League and Champions League titles every season.

Giroud could be on the way out this summer though, as his agent Michael Manuello spoke positively of a move to Serie A club Napoli.

“If he was asked to leave, then we would evaluate his options,” his agent said on Italian radio channel Radio CRC. [via: Goal]

“There is no fear from Olivier about possibly going to Napoli: it is a magnificent city. In Campania, my client could lead a wonderful life.

“Not to mention that the type of game played by [coach Maurizio] Sarri could enhance the quality of a centre forward like him.”

He added that there has still been no official word from Arsenal or approach by Napoli, but things could change.

Arsenal are hoping to use Giroud as a bargaining chip in their efforts to sign Neapolitan striker Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentine has been prolific for Napoli, helping guide them to a Champions League spot with 38 goals in 42 appearances. The Gunners are willing to offer Giroud plus a sum mooted to be around €50 million, in order to land their long-time transfer target.

The Frenchman had a poor showing at the European championships, despite scoring 3 goals. His spurned chances and lack of pace have marred his international performances this summer, something Arsenal fans have been lamenting for a while now. However Giroud could breathe new life into his career in the much slower and more tactical world of the Italian Serie A, while the arrival of Higuain could resurrect the Gunners title ambitions as they head into what may be manager Arsene Wenger’s final season in charge.
