Loris Karius arrived in Merseyside yesterday to complete his medical and was today unveiled by Liverpool as their first summer signing.

Mainz’s highly rated shot-stopper Loris Karius completed a move to Liverpool today in a deal worth £4.7 million, with the German being assigned the coveted No.1 jersey. The 22-year-old had a stellar season in goal for Martin Schmidt’s side as he helped Klopp’s former team to a 6th place finish in the Bundesliga, securing Europa League football for next season in the process.

Karius arrived for a medical at Melwood yesterday and completed all the formal procedures before being unveiled at the club’s training facility. Speaking of his move to the English giants and the Premier League, Karius told Liverpool FC,”It’s a very good feeling and it’s an honour to play for a club like this.”

“They have a special history and the fans are amazing here, so I look forward to playing at Anfield. I know a lot about the club from watching them on TV. The history, everybody who plays football knows. There a lot of things in my head when I think of this club.”

The goalkeeper also explained how fellow countryman and manager Jurgen Klopp was a key factor in him signing for the Merseysiders. Recalling his talk with Klopp, Karius said,”I spoke to the manager and I had a good feeling afterwards because he told me what he wants to do with the club and with the players. It was a good talk with him and after that I was convinced this was the right decision.”

With Karius, Klopp has now signed his 3rd player as Liverpool manager with January signings, Marko Grujic and Joel Matip set to join the Reds in June. Speaking of his delight over the German’s signing, Klopp told the club’s website,”I am delighted we have signed Loris, he has had a fantastic season with Mainz and has developed into a very good goalkeeper since his return to Germany.”

“I am really pleased that we were able to move so quickly to get him and that Loris has shown such a desire to come to Liverpool with a lot of other clubs interested in him. I know he will add to the quality we have in this position and I look forward to working with him and all our players when we return for pre-season.”

Karius previously spent a two-year spell as a youth at Manchester City before he returned to Germany, having been offered a contract by Mainz. The youngster hasn’t looked back ever since and has charted a steady progress since being handed his debut by Thomas Tuchel in 2012.

The 6ft 2ins shot-stopper had featured in 91 games for Mainz over the last two seasons and was voted the second best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga by his fellow compatriots, finishing only behind Manuel Neuer. Karius will come to be viewed as a strong competition to Simon Mignolet’s spot in the Liverpool starting XI and it would help extract the best out of the Belgian too. So this is a move that benefits all parties and with a promising goalkeeper coming for a price-tag of only  £4.7 million, the Reds may have well secured themselves a bargain.
