Manchester City qualified for the last eight of the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever, but the recurrence of captain Vincent Kompany’s calf injury dampened the Citizens’ spirits considerably.
Manchester City progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 aggregate win over Dynamo Kiev. The second leg at the Etihad ended in a goalless draw, but the unfortunate highlight of the night for Manuel Pellegrini’s side was the injury to captain Vincent Kompany just six minutes into the game.
The Chilean confirmed after the match that it was a recurrence of the calf injury that has seen the Belgian miss most of this season. Understandably, City fans were distraught to hear the news, particularly with an all-important derby against Manchester United coming up on Sunday.
Rival supporters and neutrals, however, found humour in the situation, and took to social media site Twitter to express it.
Here are the best reactions to Tuesday’s game at the Etihad:
Absolutely love big Vincent Kompany. Gutted to see him pull up again tonight. Just can’t seem to shift these injuries, very strange.

Mangala to do the business on Sunday although I’m absolutely gutted for Kompany. Hope he can come back stronger next season.

Kompany out for a minimum of one month apparently. Unbelievable. Finishing in the top four just got a lot harder. pic.twitter.com/vRRkMAKPHZ

It’s got to the point where I feel very sorry for Vincent Kompany. Fantastic player but his body packs in all too often. Sad.

If that is Vincent Kompany’s calf again, it will be the 14th time since he joined Man City in 2008

Kompany injured (for the rest of the season it seems), City struggling…why can’t we get Top Four? #Believe
