It looks increasingly likely that current Italy manager Antonio Conte will take over as Jose Mourinho’s long term successor at Chelsea. Andrea Pirlo, one of his players at Juventus and Italy, recently opened up about his former manager.
Conte had a successful career both as a player and as a manger at Juventus. As a player he won five league titles with the Old Lady, as well as the Champions League. His resume as a manager is equally impressive, and after winning the Serie B with Bari, the Italian won the Serie A with Juventus for three consecutive seasons.
During his time as Juventus manager and as coach of the national team, Conte has worked closely with the legendary Andrea Pirlo. The midfielder was recently asked for his thoughts about his former manager and the 46-year-old’s potential move to England. Pirlo described Conte as an intense figure who obsesses about football.
“There is a beast in him,” began Pirlo, according to the Mirror. “I have been in his dressing room at half-time when we have been winning, but he comes in and will be throwing full bottles of water around because of a mistake we made or because he feels we should be further ahead.
“It is a good job Elisabetta is such an understanding wife, and if he takes the Chelsea job then she will have plenty of time to enjoy London, because he has two wives – Elisabetta and football.
“I even know he will turn on the bedroom lights in the middle of the night because he has thought of something he needs to write down – you will not find a more understanding woman than her.”
Chelsea’s next manager all but confirmed
Stamford Bridge hero Jose Mourinho was sacked by the Blues at the end of last year after a string of bad results found them hovering one point off the relegation zone in the Premier League. Since then, Guus Hiddink has done an admirable job in terms of steadying the ship, but the Dutchman has made it abundantly clear that he will not consider staying at Chelsea beyond the summer.
Even though the Blues have been linked heavily with the likes of Diego Simeone and Massimiliano Allegri, it is the Italian national coach Antonio Conte who is reportedly on the verge of signing for the London club after the 2016 Euros. Conte is expected to sign a 3-year contract with the Stamford Bridge outfit, and it will be interesting to see what the ‘beast with two wives’ will do with the ailing Chelsea team.
