The former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder was discovered by Mourinho at FC Porto, and he thinks that his compatriot is the man who can restore Manchester United to their former glory.
Deco was a key figure in Jose Mourinho’s Champions League triumph in 2003-04. He went on to play for Barcelona for four successive seasons, before transferring to Chelsea in 2008 and helping them win the double in 2009-10.
The Brazil-born, Portuguese midfielder recently joined the ranks of those who would like to see his former mentor at Old Trafford. Deco thinks that his compatriot can take Manchester United back to the highest level of club football.
“Manchester United have to get back to the highest level and Mourinho is the man to do it,” said Deco, according to fourfourtwo.com.
“Mourinho will bring confidence back to both players and fans… You cannot win anything if you have no confidence.”
Mourinho wants Manchester United, but do the Red Devils want Mourinho
Jose Mourinho has long been linked to the Old Trafford job and the manager has been reportedly waiting for a call from Ed Woodward, having rejected offers from a number of clubs across Europe after his unceremonious departure from Chelsea earlier this season.
His case has only been helped by Louis van Gaal’s failings at the club. The Red Devils are faltering both domestically and in Europe. They were defeated by relegation battling underdogs Sunderland in their last league outing, while they were knocked out in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and even lost to minnows FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.
Jose Mourinho is one of only five managers to have won the UEFA Champions League with two different clubs. He is also one of five managers to have won top division titles in at least four different countries. The special one is definitely one of the best managers of all time, but it remains to be seen if Manchester United will give him the chance to achieve his Old Trafford dream.
