With the game headed for a draw at the end of an eventful Euro 2016 opener at Saint Denis, West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet picked out an absolute blinder two minutes from time to win it for hosts France.

Coming at the back of a fantastic domestic season with West Ham United in the Premier League, Dimitri Payet was among the bright spots for Didier Deschamps’ side last night as France looked to kick-start their competition in style with a win in front of the home crowd. The 29-year-old assisted Olivier Giroud in the 58th minute to give Les Bleus the lead, only for Romania to score 7 minutes later through a Bogdan Stancu penalty when Patrice Evra brought the forward down inside the box.

Towards the end of the game, with Romania sitting back to hold their precious point, the French fans were crying out for a moment of magic from their men on the field when Payet sent in a wrong-footed rocket past Ciprian Tătăruşanu to send Saint Denis wild with celebration.
