The Daily Mail reports Arsenal could make a stunning move for Chelsea’s Frank Lampard this winter, in a bid to prise him from other clubs waiting for him to become a free agent next summer.

The Daily Mail reports Frank Lampard could make a stunning switch to Chelsea’s North London rivals Arsenal, this January. Arsene Wenger, whose club have free fallen down to 10th in the standings, is reportedly on the look out for a senior player with the caliber and mettle requiredAi??to succeed inAi??the Barclays Premier League. Lampard’s contract with Chelsea ends in the summer after which, as a free agent, the Blues vice-captain was expected to move to LA Galaxy or join Drogba at Shanghai.
If this move does transpire, the irony of it wouldn’t be lost on too many. In a bid to get Chelsea to play with more flamboyancy, a bit like Arsenal you might say, Chelsea have gradually reduced Lampard’s role in the side. Once the nucleus of the Chelsea team and nowAi??a forlorn figure on the periphery, Lampard is unlikely to feature prominently under Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard was on record claiming both Lampard and Ashley Cole are likely to be leaving soon, and he believes that he isn’t going to be inclined to give them a second lease of life at The Bridge.
But does this all point to Lampard flying high at The Emirates any time soon? You can put your money on Lampard not ending up in the Gunners’ dressing room. In a club where wages are notoriously restricted, Lampard’s demands -Ai??met at Chelsea with change to spare -Ai??are likely to be scoffed at. The midfield stalwart would be better off moving to Real Madrid, with the promise of reuniting with Jose Mourinho. He could even cash in on lucrative moves to LA Galaxy replacing David Beckham as the next big football star on the West Coast. There’s also the option of Shanghai Shenhua where his vision would certainly make life more comfortable for former Chelsea teammates Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka. All of those moves will not detract from years of glorious service to the club, and few ChelseaAi??fans will count his move as a great betrayal.
With all these options in front of him, Frank Lampard would have to get very bad advice if he eventually chooses to end up at Arsenal. The report presumes Lampard is unhappy at Chelsea and is desperate for a move, and it’s very likely right on that front. But the idea that he would cut his nose just to spite his face is ludicrous. Lesser accomplished players with dreams of being a star have fled Arsenal in recent times, so there’s no conceivable reason why Lampard would seek to be contrarian. Stranger things have happened, but we’re going to laugh this report off.
