Pierre Sage under increasing pressure at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace could end up sacking French tactician Pierre Sage just months after he took charge at Selhurst Park.

Pierre Sage is under increasing pressure at Crystal Palace and could become the first Premier League manager to lose his job this season following a humiliating 5-0 defeat against bitter rivals Brighton. According to the Daily Mail, Palace chiefs have growing concerns about the Frenchman’s defensive approach, with his position increasingly uncertain after another disappointing performance from his side.

The hierarchy reportedly considered dismissing him in September, but a goalless draw against Leeds United provided respite. However, the heavy defeat at Brighton has intensified the scrutiny surrounding Sage, whose team have struggled to establish a defensive shape since his arrival in the summer.

Crystal Palace have conceded 17 goals in seven Premier League matches, giving them the worst defensive record in the division. Their performances at the back have become a major concern for the club’s decision-makers, who are understood to have doubts about Sage’s methods.

The Frenchman has also reportedly developed a strained relationship with key figures at Selhurst Park. His decision to drop Jaydee Canvot following a poor performance previously irritated chairman Steve Parish, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his position.

Sage could end up getting sacked

Sage arrived at Crystal Palace after his spell at RC Lens and has managed ten matches across all competitions, recording four wins, five defeats and a draw. While that record includes some positive results, winning only two of their seven league games has left the club’s leadership questioning his capacity to improve results.

The 5-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion could prove particularly damaging given the importance of the rivalry to Palace supporters. The manner of the defeat, combined with the team’s defensive shortcomings, has increased the pressure on Sage at a crucial stage of the campaign. Speaking after the match, the summer arrival admitted he was unsure whether he would remain in charge.

“I don’t know,” Sage said when asked if he would keep his job.

He also apologised to the supporters, acknowledging that Palace had failed to meet the standards expected in such an important fixture. The manager insisted he would continue working to improve the team, despite his frustration with the result.

Sage’s immediate future now appears uncertain, with the club’s hierarchy expected to assess the situation following the Brighton humiliation. With the Eagles struggling to deliver consistent results and confidence in the manager’s methods reportedly fading, the Frenchman faces a crucial period to save his position.
