Manchester United and Tottenham have suffered a blow in pursuit of Fabian Hurzeler, as Brighton & Hove Albion have no intention of negotiating his departure.
According to a report by Football Insider, Brighton & Hove Albion have refused to entertain offers for Fabian Hurzeler, amidst interest from Manchester United and Tottenham, with the Premier League manager’s long-term deal underpinning their resolve.
The 33-year-old has made an impressive start to the new campaign, helping the Seagulls climb to third in the Premier League after three wins from their opening five matches. Hurzeler’s reputation has grown further following Brighton’s impressive 3-0 victory over Arsenal in their most recent league fixture.
Brighton have also produced impressive victories over Aston Villa and Coventry City this season, winning those games 4-0 and 5-0 respectively. The German tactician has consequently attracted attention from clubs further up the Premier League table, with Manchester United and Tottenham understood to be very keen on him.
Brighton anticipated that interest when they handed Hurzeler a new contract in May, tying him to the club until 2029 and strengthening their position should other clubs attempt to lure him away. However, the agreement has not prevented speculation surrounding his future.
Manchester United and Tottenham could make a move for Hurzeler
Manchester United’s interest could become particularly significant if pressure continues to build on Michael Carrick. The Red Devils currently sit 12th with five points from their opening five matches, having recorded one victory and two draws.
Their 1-0 defeat against a 10-man Manchester City side and their exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of Brighton have added further scrutiny to Carrick’s position.
Tottenham’s situation is even more difficult. Roberto De Zerbi’s side are bottom of the Premier League with just two points from five games and remain without a league victory. Their poor start has inevitably increased questions over the Italian’s position.
Should either club move to replace their manager, Hurzeler would be a primary target. Brighton, though, are not preparing for his departure. The 33-year-old has already demonstrated his ability to develop the team since taking charge, and his recent results have only strengthened the club’s belief in his long-term project.
The Seagulls therefore have little incentive to enter discussions over his future, particularly with the manager tied down until 2029. Any approach from Manchester United or Tottenham would face substantial contractual and financial obstacles.
