Manchester United ahead of Newcastle United, Tottenham in Edmond Tapsoba race

Manchester United have moved ahead of Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.

Edmond Tapsoba has emerged as one of the most sought-after centre-backs during the closing stages of the summer transfer window, with all three Premier League clubs monitoring his situation. However, United currently appear to be the most advanced of his suitors after making contact with Tapsoba’s representatives regarding a potential move to Old Trafford.

According to TEAMTalk, Tottenham and Newcastle remain firmly in contention and are maintaining dialogue as they assess their defensive options, meaning United still face significant competition if they decide to formalise their interest. Leverkusen are understood to value Tapsoba at around €50 million and, despite having no desire to actively push him towards the exit, could consider an offer that meets their demands.

Manchester United step up Edmond Tapsoba interest

Tapsoba’s combination of physicality, pace and composure in possession has made him an attractive option for Premier League clubs looking to reinforce their defence. Manchester United have now taken the most significant step by opening discussions with the Burkina Faso international’s representatives, a long-standing target for them.

However, Leverkusen remain in a strong negotiating position after Tapsoba signed a new contract running until 2031 earlier this year. The Bundesliga club therefore have little reason to compromise significantly on their valuation, and any interested club may have to approach the €50 million mark to convince them to sell.

Tapsoba has been an integral part of Leverkusen’s defence since arriving from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2020, making around 270 appearances across all competitions and scoring 13 goals. He was also a key member of the side that won the Bundesliga title, further enhancing his reputation as one of Germany’s leading centre-backs.

Tottenham and Newcastle remain in the race

Manchester United’s progress does not mean Tottenham or Newcastle can be discounted. Both clubs are exploring defensive reinforcements and have maintained contact regarding Tapsoba’s situation. Tottenham’s search has become particularly important following Cristian Romero’s departure, while Newcastle are also assessing opportunities to strengthen their backline before the deadline. For now, though, United have positioned themselves at the front of the queue.

Tapsoba’s experience, physical attributes and ability to progress possession from defence make him an obvious Premier League target. Manchester United have gained an early advantage by contacting his representatives, but this remains an open race rather than an imminent transfer.

With Bayer Leverkusen protected by a contract until 2031, the decisive factor may simply be which of United, Tottenham or Newcastle is prepared to turn its interest into a convincing €50 million proposal first.
