Chelsea are reportedly keen on having Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on their bench ahead of next season.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Oliver Glasner is one of the names on Chelsea’s shortlist as they look for a new manager ahead of next season. The Crystal Palace boss remains in their conversation and is believed to be quite high on their wishlist, as he will be available for free after the end of the ongoing campaign.
While the Blues are exploring several options, a report from the BBC states they have established contact with top managerial prospects, alluding to Glasner being one of them, to discuss the possibility of taking the Stamford Bridge job this summer. The Austrian manager is open to staying in England, which aids the Premier League giants.
On the back of an impressive track record in German football, Glasner took charge of Crystal Palace at the start of 2024. Under the 51-year-old, they have gone from being a mid-table club to one that fights for a European spot. He has even helped them win the FA Cup as well as the Community Shield.
Despite creating a lasting legacy at Selhurst Park, Glasner has decided to bring an end to his stint at the South London club, having grown frustrated with the club’s transfer strategy. Given his track record, he certainly won’t have any shortage of options heading into the summer, with recent reports linking him with Newcastle United, among others.
Glasner could take up the Chelsea job
Chelsea have emerged as a potential destination for the 51-year-old, who is keen to continue in England. The Blues are on the lookout for a top manager who can become their next head coach after they parted ways with Liam Rosenior last month.
The work that Glasner has done at Crystal Palace and the manner in which young players like Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Adam Wharton, and Marc Guehi thrived under him suggest he could be the perfect fit for the Chelsea squad, which is home to some of the best young players in the world.
The West London club are reportedly ready to hand the new manager significant control over transfers, which could appeal to Glasner given his frustrations at Crystal Palace of late. The 51-year-old prefers a pragmatic, yet attacking brand of football, something the Blues will prioritise while making a new appointment, considering their defensive struggles this season.
However, he is unlikely to be a preferred candidate due to his handling of the Marc Guehi situation. The Blues have already sacked Enzo Maresca for questioning their decisions, so they may hesitate over a manager who could conflict with the board.
