Chelsea looking to beat Liverpool in Xabi Alonso race

Chelsea are reportedly ready to push ahead in their pursuit of Xabi Alonso and beat Liverpool to his signature after sacking Liam Rosenior.

Liam Rosenior has been sacked by Chelsea in the aftermath of their defeat to Brighton and the manner of that result. The Blues are widely expected to appoint a new full-time manager in the summer, with Fichajes reporting that Xabi Alonso could be their No.1 choice as they look to beat Liverpool to the former Real Madrid boss.

Chelsea handed Liam Rosenior a five-year deal upon announcing his appointment four months ago after sacking Enzo Maresca. The former RC Strasbourg boss had a flying start to life at Stamford Bridge, and at one point, it looked like the club may have made the right gamble by placing him at the helm.

However, last evening’s terrible loss to Brighton & Hove Albion marked the fifth straight defeat for the club in the Premier League, further diminishing their chances of Champions League qualification next season. In the aftermath, Chelsea have announced Rosenior’s departure, as they will now look to appoint a new full-time manager in the summer.

There were some candidates, like Diego Simeone mentioned in reports, but it appears Xabi Alonso might be their top target ahead of the close season. Alonso, who has been out of a job since being sacked by Real Madrid, is on the lookout for a promising project which includes a lot of young players.

Chelsea could suit him in that regard, but that is just the surface before they begin their pursuit of the 44-year-old former Real Madrid manager. More importantly, the Blues must find ways to beat Liverpool in their efforts to land the Spanish World Cup winner to become Rosenior’s successor.

Will Liverpool tomove away from Xabi Alonso?

Liverpool are still unclear with their decision-making on the managerial front, as multiple reports have stated Arne Slot could continue at the club next season. Alonso is a big target for the Reds in case they decide to part ways with the Dutchman, although that is not the order of business for the club.

Hence, Liverpool might fall behind other suitors like Chelsea, who are currently in need of a new manager and could put forward a clear plan for the Spaniard. For now, nothing has been decided for Alonso and where he might manage next, as he could thoroughly evaluate the market and offers before coming to a final decision on his next venture.
