Arsenal ahead of Chelsea, Everton, West Ham United in Emmanuel Fernandez race

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race for Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez, with three more English clubs chasing the Nigerian defender.

Rangers have a big decision on their hands as the possibility of losing key defender Emmanuel Fernandez looms ahead of the summer. A report by TEAMtalk has insisted that Arsenal are ahead in the race for the Nigerian centre-back, as Chelsea, West Ham United, and Everton are also in the mix.

Arsenal could continue building their defensive setup despite boasting one of the best in the business. Mikel Arteta added a few more names to his backline last summer as Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie joined their setup, already considered one of the best in the world.

However, the Gunners are not stopping in their tracks, as they seek further reinforcements centrally and in the full-back areas. Centrally, they are eager to recruit a defender that suits their style, and one that will complement or cover for William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães and the aforementioned Mosquera.

Emmanuel Fernandez has been a player of interest to Arsenal recently, and it appears the North Londoners are ahead of their rivals in the chase for the Nigerian. Rangers know the possibility of a departure for one of their key stars, as they could demand at least £25 million, although they might consider increasing the asking price to as much as £35 million if conditions are suitable in the market.

Arsenal are not alone in the race, as Everton, West Ham, and Chelsea are keen on the £25-35 million-rated Rangers star. The towering defender, standing at 6 feet 5 inches, is someone those clubs view as suitable for their backline, especially with his prowess in the air and overall defensive game.

Emmanuel Fernandez on the move soon?

Emmanuel Fernandez could consider the idea of leaving Rangers despite being settled there, as a move to the Premier League might prove fantastic for his career. Arsenal being ahead in the race may not mean much at this point in the saga, as the Nigerian could choose his next club based on several factors, like finances and his role in that team.

Chelsea are still experimenting with their backline, while Everton and West Ham could potentially offer Fernandez a key role in their respective setups. Overall, this seems like an open race to some extent, although the lure of Arsenal and Champions League football might prove difficult to turn down for the Rangers star.
