Aston Villa, Manchester United rival Liverpool in Denzel Dumfries race

Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing 29-year-old Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries from Serie A club Inter Milan this summer.

According to a report by Italian outlet L’Interista, Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Manchester United are interested in Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries. The three Premier League clubs are keen on reinforcing their defensive units by signing a right-back in the upcoming transfer window. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old has a release clause worth €25 million in his deal with the Serie A giants.

How has Denzel Dumfries performed for Inter Milan?

Denzel Dumfries has established himself as one of the most productive wing-backs in Serie A since joining Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in August 2021. While the 29-year-old has been in and out of the starting lineup in the last half a decade, he has been a dependable performer from the right flank.

The Dutch wing-back has made nearly 200 appearances for Inter Milan thus far while chipping in with 25 goals and 26 assists. However, Dumfries faces an uncertain future at San Siro, as he has a meagre release clause worth €25 million in his contract with the Serie A giants. The situation has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs, including Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

A man in demand

Manchester United may dip into the market for a right-back in the coming months, as Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have displayed issues in their gameplay. While Dalot’s fitness is top-notch, his decision-making in the final third is questionable. On the other hand, Mazraoui has struggled with minor injuries throughout his spell with Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Denzel Dumfries has been on Aston Villa’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as Andres Garcia has yet to make his mark since arriving at Villa Park last year. So, Unai Emery wants a quality alternative to Matty Cash, with Dumfries emerging as a viable target.

As for Liverpool, the fitness issues that Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong have struggled with this season may have compelled them to return to the market for a right-back. Additionally, signing Dumfries can allow Arne Slot to utilise Frimpong in an advanced role, making the 29-year-old Dutchman an appealing option.

Meanwhile, the Dutch defender’s release clause adds to his appeal, as a deal worth €25 million for a productive wing-back like him is a bargain. However, the report adds that the Netherlands international is a target for Manchester City, and the battle for his signature should be intense this summer.
