Atletico Madrid front-runners to sign Darwin Nunez

Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing 26-year-old Uruguayan international Darwin Nunez from Al-Hilal in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Darwin Nunez is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker in the summer transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Al-Hilal attacker has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.

However, Newcastle United will not be alone in the battle for his signature. Atletico Madrid and Juventus are also keen on landing Nunez, with the former in pole position to sign the disgruntled South American striker from Al-Hilal in the summer transfer window.

How has Darwin Nunez fared since leaving Liverpool?

Darwin Nunez has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Al-Hilal from Liverpool last summer. While the 26-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in the 2025/26 campaign thus far, his long-term future at the Saudi Pro League club has been uncertain since they signed Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad in the winter transfer window.

So, while the Uruguayan international has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 24 outings across all competitions this term, he has become a peripheral figure after Al-Hilal excluded him from the Saudi Pro League and cup squads. However, Nunez’s stock remains high, with Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

A man in demand

Newcastle United’s interest in Darwin Nunez is understandable. The Magpies are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window, as Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa have struggled to make their mark this season. Additionally, the former faces an uncertain future at St. James’ Park, compelling Newcastle United to look for a replacement.

As for Atletico Madrid, the Spanish giants hold a long-standing interest in Nunez. With Antoine Griezmann likely to embark on an adventure in MLS this summer, Los Rojiblancos must comb the market for a replacement. So, Nunez has emerged as a viable target for Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, the former Liverpool striker is also a target for Juventus, with the Bianconeri competing with Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid for his signature. However, the Colchoneros lead the race to sign Nunez, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 26-year-old Uruguayan international.
