Liverpool will not entertain any bids to part ways with 34-year-old Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Football Insider, Virgil van Dijk will remain with Liverpool beyond the summer transfer window. The Reds “have no intention of selling him” and “plan to allow him to see out the end of his contract” on June 30, 2027. The latest update has suggested that Liverpool’s decision-makers “still see [him] as a key part of the plans for next season as the club captain”.
Virgil van Dijk and his Liverpool lore
Virgil van Dijk has been one of the world’s best players since joining Liverpool from Southampton in a deal worth £75 million in January 2018. The Dutchman was already a highly-rated centre-back before he arrived at Anfield, and he has made significant progress in the last eight years.
The 34-year-old has made over 350 appearances for Liverpool thus far while chipping in with 31 goals and 13 assists. The veteran centre-back has been a rock at the back for the Merseyside outfit, excelling alongside multiple partners in the last eight years, and he has succeeded Jordan Henderson as the club captain in recent years.
The Dutch defender extended his association with Liverpool by signing a new two-year deal last summer. However, recent reports claimed that van Dijk’s long-term future at Anfield was uncertain. The latest update has provided an update on Liverpool’s plans with the long-serving Netherlands international heading into the summer transfer window.
What next?
Liverpool will not cash in on Virgil van Dijk anytime soon, and they plan to “allow him to see out the end of his contract” in 18 months. The veteran centre-back was in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2024/25 season after an exceptional campaign, playing a leading role in Liverpool’s title triumph.
However, the 34-year-old Dutchman has been horrendous in the 2025/26 season, with his performance levels plummeting this term. So, it is hardly surprising that van Dijk has seen speculation surrounding his long-term Liverpool future. However, the Premier League champions “have no intention of selling him” in the summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, irrespective of van Dijk’s future at the Merseyside outfit, they must sign a centre-back in the summer transfer window. Widespread reports have linked Liverpool with several central defenders, with Cesar Tarrega among the options on the club’s wishlist. As for van Dijk, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Netherlands international.
