Tottenham hesitant to offload Mathys Tel in January

Tottenham Hotspur may not entertain bids for 20-year-old French attacker Mathys Tel in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by French outlet RMC Sport, Mathys Tel is at a crossroads in his spell with Tottenham Hotspur. The former Bayern Munich attacking prospect has struggled for regular game time at the North London club, with Thomas Frank even excluding him from the UEFA Champions League squad before adding him as a replacement for Dominic Solanke.

However, the Lilywhites have no interest in offloading the Frenchman in the winter transfer window, even though he has struggled for regular game time in the first half of the 2025/26 season. Tel has no shortage of prospective suitors vying for his signature, with AS Roma keen on signing him.

Mathys Tel has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Bayern Munich. A native of Sarcelles, the youngster spent most of his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at Stade Rennais. However, the 20-year-old could not establish a foothold at Bayern Munich after moving to the Allianz Arena in July 2022.

Tottenham finally handed an escape route to Tel in February 2025, initially completing a loan deal before sealing a permanent move worth €35 million this past summer. However, the French attacker has yet to become a regular starter for Tottenham, managing only 607 minutes of game time in 18 outings thus far in the 2025/26 season while chipping in with three goals. Meanwhile, the youngster’s stock is high, with AS Roma among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

AS Roma’s interest in Mathys Tel makes sense. The Serie A giants are scouring the market for a productive and versatile attacker heading into the winter transfer window, as they are struggling for form. Additionally, Leon Bailey has returned to Aston Villa after a dreadful loan stint with the Giallorossi.

With Artem Dovbyk struggling to make his mark this season, Tel can arrive as an upgrade on the Ukrainian international. While Fabrice Hawkins has not mentioned AS Roma as a prospective suitor, he has revealed that Tottenham would prefer not to offload the Frenchman in the winter transfer window.

Meanwhile, recent reports have revealed that Tel is unhappy at the North London club amid his lack of game time. So, a loan exit may benefit the 20-year-old French attacker, and it will be interesting to see if he or AS Roma can convince Tottenham to do so.
