Leeds United hit roadblock in Santiago Gimenez chase

Leeds United will unlikely pay £25-30 million to sign 24-year-old Mexican international Santiago Gimenez from AC Milan in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Santiago Gimenez is the subject of interest from Leeds United. The Whites are keen on bolstering their offensive unit by signing another striker in the winter transfer window. So, the 24-year-old AC Milan centre-forward has emerged as a target for the West Yorkshire outfit.

However, AC Milan’s asking price of £25-30 million may scupper a January move, as the 2024/25 EFL Championship winners are unwilling to meet the Serie A club’s valuation. Instead, Leeds United would prefer a short-term loan deal for a striker, which may not happen with Gimenez.

How has Santiago Gimenez fared at AC Milan?

Santiago Gimenez has seen his stock plummet since joining AC Milan from Feyenoord earlier this year. While the 24-year-old was among the world’s most prolific strikers in his spell in the Eredivisie, he has struggled to make his mark during his stint with AC Milan. Additionally, he has steadily fallen in the pecking order under Massimiliano Allegri.

The Mexican international has managed only 768 minutes of game time across 11 appearances in all competitions thus far in the 2025/26 season, chipping in with one goal and two assists. However, Gimenez’s stock in the market remains high, with Leeds United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the winter transfer window.

Premier League adventure beckons?

Recent reports have revealed that intermediaries offered Santiago Gimenez to Leeds United. The Premier League club’s interest is understandable, even though Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been excellent in the last few weeks. Daniel Farke wants more firepower in the final third, as strikers other than Calvert-Lewin have failed to deliver the goods.

Several candidates, including Joshua Zirkzee, have thus emerged on Leeds United’s radar, with Gimenez also a viable target. However, AC Milan’s asking price of £25-30 million has created a stumbling block for the West Yorkshire outfit.

The 2024/25 EFL Championship winners are unwilling to pay £25-30 million to sign a player in the winter transfer window, and they will instead prefer a short-term loan deal. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Gimenez. The 24-year-old Mexican international remains a target for other Premier League clubs, including Sunderland and West Ham United.
