AC Milan, Alexis Saelemaekers committed to extended stay amid Premier League links

Alexis Saelemaekers is reportedly ready to commit his long-term future to AC Milan, with the Rossoneri set to renew the 26-year-old Belgian international’s contract until 2029.

According to an update by Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United have been keen on signing Alexis Saelemaekers in recent weeks. However, the three Premier League clubs face frustration in the race to sign the resurgent AC Milan wide player amid the two parties’ intention to extend his stay at San Siro beyond his current contract.

Alexis Saelemaekers and AC Milan resurgence

Alexis Saelamaekers has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining AC Milan from Anderlecht. The Rossoneri initially signed the 26-year-old versatile wide player on loan in January 2020 before completing a permanent move in the subsequent summer transfer window. While the player was a dependable performer for AC Milan in his first three seasons, he spent the last two campaigns away from San Siro.

However, Saelemaekers has enjoyed a resurgent run since returning to AC Milan this past summer, becoming a regular on the right flank under Massimiliano Allegri. The Belgian international has chipped in with one goal and two assists in eight appearances thus far. Meanwhile, the player’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

A man in demand

Aston Villa wanted to sign the Berchem-Sainte-Agathe native in the summer transfer window, but the deal did not materialise. The continued interest is understandable, as Unai Emery needs more firepower from the flanks after an indifferent start to the 2025/26 season. So, Saelemaekers emerged as a viable target for Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace’s interest in Alexis Saelemaekers makes sense. While Daniel Munoz has been exception for the South London club, Oliver Glasner needs an alternative to the Colombian international, as the Eagles are in four competitions this season. So, the reinvigorated AC Milan wide player was a viable target for Crystal Palace.

As for Newcastle United, the Magpies have been keen on signing Saelemaekers for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, as Eddie Howe can do with more firepower in the final third despite signing Anthony Elanga in the summer transfer window. However, the player is committed to AC Milan, with the Rossoneri closing in on securing an agreement over a new deal.

So, the latest update has dealt a blow to the prospects of Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United. The three Premier League clubs must look elsewhere for a new wing-back, as AC Milan will likely tie the 26-year-old Belgian international to a new contract in the coming days.
