Jamie Carragher tells Manchester United to sack Ruben Amorim

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Manchester United to part ways with Ruben Amorim following a poor start to the season.

Manchester United backed Ruben Amorim during the summer transfer window. They handed him significant funds to bolster his squad. While a lot was expected from his team, given the kind of signings they made, the results have not gone in their favour.

Given the kind of start they have had, the Portuguese manager’s future at the club has become a massive talking point. Speaking on Monday Night Football in the aftermath of their 3-1 defeat to Brentford, Jamie Carragher described Amorim’s time at United as a disaster.

The former Liverpool defender and football pundit, Carragher, feels it will be in the best interest of both parties if they shake hands and move on at this point. He feels Manchester United do not want to admit that they have once again gone wrong with their managerial pick, and it is one of the major reasons why they are still backing him despite their struggles.

Liverpool legend on Amorim’s future

Carragher said via Sky Sports, “The players they have brought in could easily be flipped into a back four with Bruno Fernandes as a No 10, Mbeumo on the right wing, Cunha on the left, Sesko up front and I think a competent Manchester United manager could get that team into the European places or certainly be fighting for them.

“It could not have gone any worse and I feel for him. He is a young manager and he has had a great start to his career, what he did at Sporting Lisbon was really special. But those results for a club of that stature are just beyond belief. You don’t want to see anybody lose their job but I think it would just be better for everyone if they just shake hands and move on.”

Carragher wants Manchester United to move on

Carragher believes asking Amorim to change his system makes no sense since his system is his identity. Despite their struggles, the Portuguese manager wants to stick with his ideas. While he has the right to do so, given the kind of success he had at Sporting CP, his ideas are not bringing the desired result in England.

As a result, parting ways could be the best thing for both the manager and the club. Carragher feels any top-level manager coming in could push for a European spot with the kind of players United have at their disposal. While all the signings have been made with Amorim’s back-three system in mind, the former Liverpool centre-back feels the transition won’t be that difficult, as the majority of the new signings are versatile players.

They have not invested heavily in centre-backs or wing-backs, which means a new manager could switch back to the traditional back four and deliver the results the club wants. Manchester United are unlikely to make a decision soon, but if they continue to lose, Amorim could well be the next Premier League manager to be sacked.

The Red Devils have only won nine out of 33 league games since Amorim took charge. A total of just 34 points from 33 games is simply not good enough for a team that wants to compete with the best in the country. A managerial change could be just what the doctor has ordered for the Red Devils.
