Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are looking to open contract renewal talks with academy graduate Phil Foden.
According to Graeme Bailey via TBR Football, Manchester City are all set to hand Phil Foden a new deal to secure his long-term future. The English international has regained full fitness and has been on fire in recent weeks. With him back at his best, City now want to tie him down to a new deal as he is an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s plans.
Foden has been a part of the Manchester City setup since his childhood days. He went up the ranks at some pace and got promoted to the first team back in 2017. So far, he has featured in a total of 324 matches for City, and he has contributed towards 165 goals.
While he has been a bit inconsistent in recent seasons and injuries have troubled him, the 25-year-old seems to be back at his best. He has four goal contributions in his five outings this season. Foden has thrived in a more central role, and his link-up play with Haaland has done wonders for City.
The Manchester City striker heaped praise on the attacking midfielder after his initial training sessions at the club. During his first interview as a City player back in 2022.
“I’ve been watching a lot of City games for as long as I can remember, so of course I’ve also watched Phil. He’s an amazing player, still a talent because he’s still young, but he’s an amazing player and he still has to develop and then we can really talk.”
Foden’s contract situation at Manchester City
The Englishman’s current deal is running out in the summer of 2027, City are yet to hold renewal talks with Foden. The two parties decided that it would be in the best interest of the player if he focused on regaining full fitness and getting back to his best.
Foden was fully on board with the club’s plans, and he had their full backing. Now with the 25-year-old back and firing on all cylinders, Manchester City are all set to hold talks with his agents. The Manchester-based club’s director of football, Hugo Viana, and the player’s representatives are expected to hold talks during the upcoming international break.
While speaking about the player’s contract situation, Bailey said, “Phil Foden’s link-up play with Erling Haaland this season has been joyous, but it is not a shock to City, they know what they have. Yes, there has been a bit of a rebuild, the likes of De Bruyne, Ederson, Walker have all departed.
“But with Rodri, Dias, Foden and Haaland – that is the heartbeat of this City squad and Guardiola believes they can be a match for anyone. He doesn’t want to lose any of his cornerstone players – it is a case of when Foden signs his new deal, not if.”
With some senior players leaving the club, Foden is now one of the cornerstones of the club’s project going forward. As a result, securing his long-term future is a top priority. Bailey believes it is only a matter of time before the player commits his future to the club. In Foden’s case, he feels the question is not if he will sign a new deal, but when.
