Emiliano Martinez will force Aston Villa exit if this happens

Emiliano Martinez will push to leave Aston Villa next year if the Villans continue to perform poorly after a dreadful start to the 2025/26 season.

According to a report by Football Insider, Emiliano Martinez may have an uncertain future at Aston Villa. The Argentine international is considering his position at the West Midlands club amid a dreadful start to the 2025/26 season that has left Unai Emery’s men in the relegation zone.

The Villans have yet to win a game in the 2025/26 season, and they have also bowed out of the EFL Cup. So, if Aston Villa’s struggles continue in the coming weeks and if they fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Martinez will push to depart from Villa Park in next summer’s transfer window.

Emiliano Martinez and his Aston Villa career so far

Emiliano Martinez has become a household name since joining Aston Villa from Arsenal in a deal worth £17 million in September 2020. The 33-year-old has made considerable progress in the last half a decade, becoming a mainstay between the sticks for his club and country while enjoying tremendous success in international football.

The Argentine international has made over 200 appearances thus far for Aston Villa while keeping 71 clean sheets and conceding 258 goals. However, Martinez’s long-term future at the West Midlands club has been uncertain for a long time. Things may reach a tipping point next year amid Aston Villa’s struggles in the early days of the 2025/26 season.

What next?

Emiliano Martinez was keen on joining Manchester United in the summer transfer window, and the speculation surrounding his future compelled Unai Emery to drop the former Arsenal goalkeeper in his team’s final game before the international break. However, the move to Manchester United did not materialise, with the Red Devils signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Interestingly, Lammens could have been Martinez’s replacement at Aston Villa had the South American goalkeeper joined Manchester United. However, the Belgian goalkeeper rejected Aston Villa, and Martinez remained at Villa Park anyway. As for Martinez, the experienced goalkeeper is ready to call it quits at the West Midlands club if the early-season struggles continue.

Recent reports have claimed that Manchester United may consider a winter move for Martinez. However, that may only materialise if Altay Bayindir departs from Old Trafford. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 33-year-old Argentine international.
