Newcastle United will unlikely sign 23-year-old Spanish defender Cesar Tarrega from La Liga club Valencia in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet El Desmarque, Cesar Tarrega is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 23-year-old Valencia defender has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.
However, a summer move will unlikely see the light of day, with Valencia keen on tying the Spaniard to a new long-term contract. In addition, Tarrega is ready to commit his future to Los Che, thus dealing a blow to Newcastle United’s prospects of securing his services in the summer transfer window.
Cesar Tarrega and his recent rise
Cesar Tarrega has seen his stock soar since breaking into the first-team squad at Valencia CF. The Aldaia native spent his formative years in his homeland, and he made his senior bow for Los Che at the onset of the 2023/24 season. However, the 23-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough at the Mestalla in the 2024/25 campaign.
The Spanish defender has turned out nearly 50 times thus far for Valencia while chipping in with two goals and one assist. Meanwhile, Tarrega’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Newcastle United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Newcastle United’s interest in Cesar Tarrega makes sense. The Magpies are combing the market for a centre-back this summer as they search for a long-term central defensive partner for Sven Botman. So, with Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, and Jamaal Lascelles on the wrong side of 30, Newcastle United must bolster the position.
Several candidates, including Nicolo Savona, have emerged on the Tyneside club’s radar, with Tarrega also a viable target. However, while the 23-year-old Spaniard can be a cost-effective purchase, signing him from La Liga club Valencia will be a tall order, with Los Che keen on tying him to a new long-term contract.
Additionally, Tarrega is ready to commit his long-term future to Valencia. So, Newcastle United must look elsewhere for a new centre-back, and it will be interesting to see who the Magpies turn their attention towards in the coming weeks.
