Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile has been linked with a move away from the club during the summer transfer window.
Benoit Badiashile was criticised for his inconsistent performances last season, and Ligue 1 outfit Marseille are reportedly keen on securing his signature. However, in an interview with French outlet Foot Mercato the defender has insisted that he is committed to Chelsea and wants to stay at the London club for the upcoming season.
According to the BBC, Chelsea paid £35 million for the French defender, and it will be interesting to see if he can justify that investment in the months ahead. Badiashile was highly rated during his time in France, but he has yet to showcase his full potential in the Premier League.
However, while committing his future to Chelsea, he said, “It’s an incredible end to the season for us. I’m happy and proud to make history with this club. There was a lot of work and patience to get to this point. I’m proud of my team, proud of the work we’ve done and the titles we’ve won.”
“It’s true that the seasons are very, very long for us. It’s difficult because there’s a lot of fatigue, not just physical, but also mental. But that’s part of our job. So yes, the holidays are welcome. It will allow us to recharge our batteries and come back determined for next season.”
“Yes, I will still be at Chelsea next season. The club, the coach, and all the staff give me a lot of confidence and believe in me. I will do everything to give back to them on the pitch. I love the club, the city, and the supporters. And so I hope to be able to make even more history with this magnificent club.”
Chelsea looked vulnerable defensively last season, and keeping Badiashile could prove to be a useful decision. The Frenchman has the quality to succeed in the Premier League, and he will be determined to bounce back strongly next season.
It is no surprise that he has chosen to stay at Chelsea beyond this summer despite the speculation surrounding his future. The BLues are one of the biggest clubs in the world, having won a European trophy last season as well as the FIFA Club World Cup in recent years.
With a talented and quality manager at the helm, Chelsea could be pushing for major trophies next season. The French defender clearly wants to be a part of that project. It remains to be seen whether he can redeem himself and establish himself as a key player for the club.
Can Badiashile help Chelsea improve?
If Chelsea can improve defensively this season, there is no reason why they cannot fight for major honours. Should players like Benoit Badiashile step up and deliver improved performances, the club has every chance of doing well. However, amid Marseille’s eagerness to sign him, the Ligue 1 giants will hope to take him back to his homeland.
It will be interesting to see whether Chelsea are prepared to keep faith in him and allow him to prove his worth. The French defender is still very much at the peak of his powers, and he has the qualities to adapt to English football. It remains to be seen whether he can regain his form and confidence.
